Mountain Community Chorus

A Brief History

In 1974, Dr. James Carley founded Mountain Community Chorus under the premise of bringing together members of the community to learn and perform fine choral literature. Dr. Carley explained the mission of the chorus: "The aim was to organize an amateur group who would enjoy singing quality choral music to the best degree of perfection possible; to sing a varied repertoire (with something for everyone) so that singers and our communities will be proud of our accomplishments." In 1985, when Dr. Carley retired, Mr. William Fox became director of MCC. In 2008, Mountain Community Chorus was incorporated with non-profit status.

MCC’s first performances and rehearsals were at Tri-County Community College in Murphy, NC. The choir then moved to John C. Campbell Folk School to rehearse and perform. Concerts were also held at area community churches. Currently, MCC is grateful for its relationship with Young Harris College. YHC provides rehearsal and performance space and has become integral partners in providing music to the community.

In the spring of 2015 we compiled pictures, notes and remembrances of MCC's first forty years. Thank you to all who contributed!
